Amsterdam — one date in the calendar is worth planning around

The one day that is genuinely different

On King's Day — 27 April — Amsterdam fills with orange-clad crowds and the network struggles with it. Expect severe congestion from around 10am to 8pm, concentrated wherever the crowds are, which is most of the centre and all of the canal ring.

The answer is preparation rather than a better plan. No eSIM outruns a mast with a hundred thousand people under it. The night before, pre-load your navigation, save your accommodation address as text rather than as a map pin, and work out your transport options in advance. If you are arriving or leaving on King's Day, screenshot your booking references.

Outside that date, Amsterdam is unremarkable — good urban coverage, nothing a visitor needs to route around, and no reason to buy differently than you would for Rotterdam or Utrecht.

Save your tickets offline, not just online

Amsterdam is a city of timed entry. Anne Frank House requires advance online booking and sells out weeks ahead in peak season. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum both strongly recommend online timed-entry booking. All of them check a QR code at the door.

That code needs to work at the gate, in a queue, possibly in a stone building with poor indoor signal, on a phone whose battery has been running maps all morning. Store the confirmations in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet so they open without a connection. This is the single most useful piece of Amsterdam-specific advice on this page, and it costs nothing.

The same applies to transit. The GVB app handles tram, metro and ferry tickets digitally, and 9292 plans journeys across all Dutch public transport. OV-fiets bike hire is available at every major train station and is how a lot of visitors get around beyond the centre — set up the account before you need it, not while standing at the rack.

What data costs

Pricing is national. These were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026:

Read the bottom row before deciding. The Dutch market does not stop at 20 GB, and the 50 GB plan is close to half the per-gigabyte cost of the 20 GB one. If you are here for a month, or sharing a hotspot, that is the plan.

For a city break you need far less. Saily's verified 1 GB for seven days is $3.99, read from its own site on 16 August 2026; Airalo's verified 1 GB for three days is $4. For a week, the comfortable default is 5 GB over 30 days — $9.99 from Saily or $10 from Airalo, both verified and a penny apart.

Unlimited plans are worth a look for short, heavy trips: Airalo's verified unlimited runs $11.50 for three days and $18.50 for five. Holafly's equivalents are indicative at $11.70 and $19.50.

Networks, honestly

One provider lists a Dutch host network, and the claim is not confirmed: eSIMCard lists KPN and Odido. Holafly's listing points to no carrier at all — the Vodafone Netherlands entry this page used to show against it came from our own data rather than from Holafly. Airalo does not publish a host network for the Netherlands at all, and neither do Saily or Nomad — we read Saily's site on 16 August 2026 and Nomad's on 18 August, and neither names an operator for any country. Do not choose between them on that basis — in a city with three well-built networks, it would not change your day even if it were confirmed.

Buying a physical SIM here

The Netherlands requires no ID for prepaid — it is an instant purchase, which is unusual in Western Europe and makes buying on the ground genuinely easy. Airport packages typically run around $18, well above the $10 you would pay for a verified 5 GB eSIM bought before you fly.
