Galway: good in town, thinner the further west you go

Ireland is in the EU and roam-like-at-home applies, so an EU or EEA SIM works here on your normal allowance at normal rates. Buy nothing. UK visitors should check their own operator, since post-Brexit terms differ by network. The rest of this page is about where the signal goes, which matters whatever SIM you are holding.

The city is good. The last fortnight of July is crowded rather than broken.

Galway has very good 4G throughout. For a city stay — Eyre Square, the Latin Quarter, the Claddagh — nothing needs planning.

The Galway International Arts Festival in July and the Galway Races in late July push the city to its limits. That is primarily an accommodation problem: book months ahead. Network load rises with the crowds, so expect it to feel slower in the centre during those weeks, but it is congestion rather than any gap in coverage, and no plan fixes congestion.

Connemara: the tourist route works, the shortcuts do not

Galway is the gateway to Connemara, and the main tourist route holds up better than its reputation suggests. The R336 and R344 are reasonable along the standard circuit, including the Sky Road and Roundstone. It is the remote side roads that lose signal — and those are exactly the roads people take when they decide to explore rather than follow the itinerary.

So the rule for Connemara is not "buy a bigger plan". It is: if you are staying on the loop, you will be fine, and if you intend to wander, download the offline map in Galway first.

The Aran Islands are the real gap

Inishmore has limited coverage, and what there is concentrates in Kilronan, the main village. Outside it, assume nothing.

The crossing is its own thing. On the ferry from Rossaveal, signal drops progressively as you move out across Galway Bay — not a sudden cut-off, but a steady decline you can watch happen. That is the moment to have already downloaded what you need, not to start.

Download offline maps of Inishmore before you board. The island's road network is not complicated and you are unlikely to get genuinely lost, but having the map removes the low-level anxiety of cycling somewhere unfamiliar with a phone that has stopped being useful. Ferry times for the return are worth screenshotting for the same reason.

What to buy, and where

Ireland requires no ID for a prepaid SIM, so buying locally is quick — but a local SIM runs about $20 at the airport, and travel eSIMs start well below that.

Airalo's Irish rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; the Saily row is a listing we hold rather than a checkout we watched. Airalo's Irish plan is sold under the name Fáilte, which is Airalo's own product branding rather than a carrier, and it does not publish which Irish network the plan connects to. Neither does Saily or Nomad.

For a Galway city break, 3 GB is enough. For a week using Galway as a base for Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher and a day on Inishmore, 5 GB to 10 GB is the sensible shape — not because those places consume data, but because navigation apps burn through it when they are re-routing on unfamiliar roads, and because you will be pulling down map tiles defensively before every leg.
