Comparing SIM cards for Ireland: most European visitors should buy nothing

For a lot of readers this page is unnecessary

Ireland is a member of the European Union, so roam-like-at-home applies. If you are arriving from anywhere in the EU or EEA on a domestic SIM, your allowance follows you and you should buy nothing at all.

That covers a large share of visitors to Ireland, and it is the first thing anyone comparing SIMs here should check rather than the last.

British visitors are the awkward case. Roaming arrangements after Brexit vary by operator — some kept free EU roaming, some reintroduced daily charges — so check your own tariff rather than assuming either way. Irish and British numbers are not interchangeable for this purpose.

Everyone else — North American, Australian, Asian arrivals — is buying something, and the rest of this page is for you.

What the travel eSIMs charge

Airalo's rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026; the Saily row is a listing we hold rather than a checkout we watched. We hold no Ireland pricing for eSIM Go, which publishes none, or for eSIMCard, whose rows were withdrawn site-wide after we read its pages, so both are left out rather than guessed at. Two of these rows used to name Nomad at prices that were never read from its site — $9 at 5 GB, which is really $12.50 — and the table has been corrected.

The floor is 84 cents a gigabyte, which is cheap by European standards, and the curve is steep — moving from 3 GB to 10 GB almost halves your rate. If you are hesitating between two sizes here, take the larger one.

Nomad and Airalo both sell uncapped plans, and Nomad is the cheaper of the two at every length they share: $11, $18, $25 and $33 for three, five, seven and ten days. Holafly sells unlimited only: $20.50 for five days, $36.50 for ten and $50.50 for fifteen. Holafly sells six windows and no others — 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days — so the 25- and 90-day plans this page used to list do not exist. That last one is the interesting row. At $1.10 a day it is far better value than the 25-day plan at $2.76 a day, which is worth knowing if you are here for a season rather than a week.

The $20 counter does not add up

Local SIMs cost around $20 at the airport, and Ireland asks for no ID — the purchase is instant and unrestricted, which is a genuine convenience.

The problem is the price. At $20 you could instead buy 10 GB from Nomad at $16, or exactly 20 GB from Nomad for the same $20. We do not hold a verified allowance for what the Irish counter bundle contains, so we cannot tell you it is beaten — but it would need to include a good deal of data to justify itself, and the burden of proof sits with the counter.

If you do want a physical SIM, the pickup points are straightforward. Dublin Airport sells them through WH Smith in Terminal 1 and the SPAR convenience store near arrivals in Terminal 2. Three, Vodafone and Eir have carrier stores in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

The networks are unusually good

Ireland averages 65 Mbps, which is high, and the 5G build-out is further along than most people expect.

Three Ireland has 94%-plus 5G coverage and the fastest average data speeds, and it is our recommendation for visitors. Eir claims 99% 5G population coverage. Vodafone Ireland is strong in urban areas with 4G reaching 99% of the population and 5G expanding through Dublin, Cork and Galway.

None of that is a decision you can make with an eSIM. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly publish no Irish host network at all. An earlier version of this page said every provider we price for Ireland had Three access and most had Vodafone too, and credited Holafly's own listing with three operators; nothing supports either claim, and both have gone. Where it stops working

The gaps are all in the places people drive to precisely because they are remote.

The Atlantic peninsulas are the main ones — Dingle, Beara and Malin Head all have stretches with little or no coverage. So do the Wicklow Mountains and the interior of Connemara. The offshore islands, including the Aran Islands, Cape Clear and Tory Island, have limited service.

If your itinerary is the Wild Atlantic Way, no provider fixes this, because it is a mast problem rather than a plan problem. Download the whole route offline before you leave a city.

Verdict

EU or EEA SIM: buy nothing.
