Buying a SIM card at Cork Airport (ORK)

Most people landing at Cork should buy nothing

Ireland is in the EU, and roam-like-at-home applies. If your phone plan came from anywhere in the EU or EEA, it works in Cork at your normal domestic allowance and your normal domestic price. There is no counter to find and no purchase to make. Given how much of Cork's traffic arrives from continental Europe, that is the correct answer for a large share of the people reading this.

UK arrivals are the awkward case. Since Brexit, EU roaming from a British plan depends entirely on which operator you are with — some still include it, some charge daily. Check your own tariff before you fly rather than assuming either way.

Everyone else — US, Canada, and long-haul arrivals — read on, but the honest summary is that Cork Airport is a thin place to buy.

What is actually available

There is no carrier-operated shop at Cork Airport. What exists is Three Ireland SIMs sold through the convenience stores in arrivals. That is the whole of it. We hold no record of a Vodafone or Eir presence, no dedicated SIM counter, and no opening hours for the stores that do stock them.

The upside is speed. The queue is around five minutes at peak and two minutes off-peak, because you are queueing at a shop till rather than waiting for a carrier to register you. And Ireland requires no ID for a prepaid SIM — it is an instant over-the-counter purchase, unlike Germany or Spain where you hand over a passport and wait.

So Cork is fast but narrow. If a Three SIM suits you, you will be out in two minutes. If you wanted a choice of network, you do not have one here.

Is buying there a good idea?

For a short trip, probably not. Our country data puts a typical Irish airport SIM at around $20, and for that money you are buying a starter pack with whatever bundle happens to be attached to it, with no ability to compare.

And if you are here for a month, note the 50 GB plan at $42 — $0.84 per gigabyte, the best rate anywhere in our Irish data. Ireland is not an expensive eSIM market once you stop buying in small pieces.

Saily lists 1 GB for 7 days at $3.99, cheaper than anything above at that size, and we have now read it off Saily's own site. On networks, and what we will not tell you

The one thing a convenience-store SIM gives you that an eSIM does not is certainty: buy a Three Ireland SIM and you are on Three Ireland.

With the travel eSIMs, nobody knows. Airalo and Saily publish no host network for Ireland at all — "Fáilte" is a product name at checkout, not a carrier. Nomad publishes nothing either — the Three and Vodafone listing this page used to carry against it was never sourced from Nomad. Holafly's listing points to Three, Eir and Vodafone, which nobody independent has confirmed, and an earlier version of this page stated the three-network combination as fact. It was not one. If rural coverage in West Cork or on the Beara peninsula is the thing you are worried about, the Three SIM from the shop is the only purchase where you know what you are getting.

While you are still in the terminal

Free WiFi is normally available throughout Cork Airport, which is enough to install and activate an eSIM if you forgot to do it before boarding. Public transport and taxis both connect the airport to the city centre. We do not hold journey times or fares for either, so check at the rank rather than trusting a number from us.
