Cork: excellent in the city, and the drives out of it are the problem

The city is not the issue

Cork has excellent 4G and 5G. As Ireland's second city it has the infrastructure to match — average 4G around 55 Mbps, and 5G reaching roughly 200 Mbps where it is available. Three Ireland and Vodafone are both strong here.

For a city stay, you barely need to think about this. Any plan works, and Saily's 1 GB, seven-day listing at $3.99 is enough for a few days of maps, restaurant bookings and messages.

The drives are the issue

Cork is the gateway to Ireland's best-known scenic routes: the Ring of Kerry, the Beara Peninsula and the West Cork coastline. All three involve long stretches with minimal coverage.

Ring of Kerry rural roads are spotty. The Beara Peninsula has limited coverage generally. These are not brief dips between masts; they are sustained stretches where a phone-based navigation plan stops working.

Download offline maps for the entire route while you are still in Cork with a 200 Mbps connection. This is the single most useful thing on this page. Doing it in a lay-by on Beara is not an option, which is precisely the problem.

The same applies to accommodation details, ferry times for the Beara cable car crossing area, and anything else you will want mid-drive. Screenshot it in the city.

What to buy

If you are arriving from an EU or EEA country on a domestic SIM, buy nothing — Ireland is in the EU and roam-like-at-home applies. British visitors should check their own operator, since post-Brexit arrangements vary.

The road-trip recommendation deserves a note. You do not need 10 GB because the peninsulas use more data; you need it because navigation apps burn through data when they are re-routing on unfamiliar roads, and because you will be downloading map tiles defensively.

Buying locally

Three Ireland has a store on Patrick Street, Cork's main shopping thoroughfare, and Cork Airport has a convenience store selling SIMs on arrival — a quick purchase, and Ireland requires no ID for prepaid, so there is no paperwork.

A local SIM runs about $20. Given that eSIM data here starts at $3.99 and bottoms out near 84 cents a gigabyte, the counter has to include a lot to compete, and we do not hold a verified allowance for it. Pre-installing an eSIM is both cheaper and faster.

Apps and timing

Bus Éireann for local and regional transport, and Google Maps downloaded offline for anything outside the city.

Cork's calendar is busier than its size suggests. The Jazz Festival in October and the Midsummer Festival in June are the two large cultural events, and the Kinsale Gourmet Festival, also in October, draws heavily from outside the county. Accommodation is the constraint in those weeks rather than connectivity — the city network handles it.
