Santorini: plan around one hour in Oia and one boat trip

First, the EU question

If your contract is EU or EEA, roam-like-at-home applies and Santorini costs you nothing extra. Stop reading. The rest is for visitors from outside the EEA, who are buying Greek data as a separate purchase.

The good news, which is most of the island

Santorini is easier than its reputation suggests. The caldera-rim path from Fira to Oia — two to three hours on foot, and the best walk on the island — has reasonable signal along its whole length. That is unusual for a cliff-edge trail and it means you can navigate it live rather than downloading it first.

The bus system connects the main villages and Google Maps handles the routing without difficulty. ATV and quad rentals are the common way to see anything beyond the rim villages, and the road network is small enough that getting lost is a minor event. Nothing about moving around Santorini demands a large data allowance.

Sunset at Oia is a scheduled congestion event

The Oia sunset is the most photographed moment in Greece, and it behaves like a stadium fixture. More than five thousand people gather at the viewpoint and all try to post at once. The network there congests, uploads crawl, and messages sent at 8pm may arrive at 8.40.

The important thing is that this is a capacity problem, not a coverage one. Buying more data does not fix it, and neither does buying an unlimited plan — the cell above the viewpoint is shared, and at that hour it is shared with a crowd. What does work is preparation. Save your accommodation's address and directions offline before you head to Oia, because the walk or bus back in the dark is exactly when you will want them and exactly when the network is worst. Post the photos an hour later from somewhere else. Agree in advance where you are meeting the people you came with.

The water has nothing

The caldera boat tours — the ones that run out to Nea Kameni and the hot springs — have intermittent signal, and the small volcanic islets have no coverage at all. This is a half-day with your phone effectively off, which is worth knowing before you board rather than discovering when a booking confirmation will not load.

There is no plan on the market that changes this. Screenshot your tour ticket, and if you have a table booked for the evening, confirm it before you sail.

What to buy

Santorini is a photo trip more than a navigation trip, and that shifts the sizing. Live maps use very little; a few days of high-resolution uploads use a lot. Most people here should buy for the uploads.

Airalo's Greek prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026: 1 GB over 3 days at $4, 3 GB over 7 days at $9, 5 GB over 7 days at $11, 5 GB over 30 days at $12 and 10 GB over 7 days at $19. For a three-to-five-day stay that is heavy on photographs, 5 GB is the sensible floor rather than 3. Saily's 3 GB over 30 days at $9.99 was read from Saily's own site on 16 August 2026 and is verified as well; it is the one Greek plan that pairs a small allowance with a full month, which suits a Cyclades run that starts here. Nomad's 5 GB over 30 days is $11, read from its own store on 17 August 2026 — a dollar under Airalo's 5 GB month, and an earlier version of this page had it at $12 on an unchecked listing.

If Santorini is one stop in a Cyclades itinerary, buy for the whole trip instead. Greek data gets dramatically cheaper with volume, reaching 62 cents a gigabyte at Nomad's verified 50 GB tier for $31, and the Greece hub works through where that stops being worth it.

One caveat on providers: Airalo does not publish which Greek network its plans roam onto, and the "Meraki Mobile" label at checkout is a retail product name rather than a carrier. Several other providers name host networks in their own material; we have not confirmed any of them.
