Athens Airport SIM cards: who should buy, and who should not

Most people reading this need nothing

Greece is in the EU, and roam-like-at-home means an EU or EEA contract works in Athens at your domestic rate, out of your domestic allowance. No counter, no queue, no purchase. Given where Athens' traffic comes from, that covers a very large share of the people landing at ATH.

The one thing to check before you fly is your operator's fair-use roaming cap. It is usually smaller than your home allowance and it is the only part of the system that catches people out. Beyond that, if you hold an EU SIM, stop reading and go and get your bags.

That leaves arrivals from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and most of Asia — for whom the counters at ATH are a real option.

What is in arrivals

Two operators sell in the arrivals hall: Cosmote and Vodafone Greece. Buying from either means buying from the carrier directly, which is the one thing an airport counter does better than an eSIM — you know exactly whose network you are on.

The queue runs about ten minutes at peak and three minutes off-peak. No ID is required for a prepaid SIM in Greece, so there is no passport scan and no registration wait once you reach the front. A SIM at the airport costs about $15 in our data, though we do not hold the allowance that buys.

The counters close at 23:00. Athens takes a lot of late arrivals, particularly in summer, and a counter that is shut is worth nothing. If your flight lands at midnight, the airport is not a plan.

If Athens is a connection, not a destination

ATH is where a great many island trips change planes. If you are connecting to Santorini, Mykonos, Crete or Rhodes, note that a Greek plan covers all of them — the islands are Greece, and one purchase does the whole trip. There is no reason to wait and buy at the island airport, where the counters are smaller, the stock thinner and the hours shorter. Buy once, in Athens or before you fly.

Free wifi runs throughout the terminal, which is enough to book onward transport into the city. The metro connects the airport to central Athens; we do not hold current fares or journey times, so check at the station.

The numbers

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. The Airalo rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026 and the Nomad rows from nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026.

Greece does not stop at 20 GB, and the top of the ladder is where the value sits. Airalo's 50 GB over 30 days at $42 is $0.84 a gigabyte — our Greece hub once quoted $31 for that plan, which was wrong, and $42 is the figure read from the store. Nomad's 50 GB, checked on 17 August 2026, genuinely is $31, which works out at $0.62 a gigabyte and is the cheapest rate in the country. Its 20 GB at $21 is $1.05.

So the airport SIM at about $15 has to deliver roughly 24 GB to match the cheapest 50 GB eSIM on rate, which Greek tourist packs generally do not. The full ladder is on the Greece hub.

Which network the eSIMs use

Airalo publishes no host network for Greece. Meraki Mobile is the name its Greek plans are sold under — a product, not a carrier.

Saily publishes nothing either: its Greek pages name no carrier at all, only "a reliable connection from the country's best networks". eSIMCard names Cosmote and Vodafone in its own listings, and it is the only seller here that names anything. Nomad and Holafly name nothing — earlier versions of this page said Nomad named Cosmote and Holafly named Cosmote, Nova and Vodafone, and neither claim came from the seller. The one listing that remains has not been confirmed with the operators, so treat it as the seller's claim and do not pick a plan on that basis. If knowing your network genuinely matters — because you are heading somewhere remote — the counter in arrivals is the way to be certain, provided you land before 23:00.
