Crete: a driving island, and that changes what you should buy

EU visitors: nothing to do here

If your phone contract is EU or EEA, roam-like-at-home applies across Crete exactly as it does on the mainland. Your existing allowance works at your domestic rate and there is nothing on this page worth buying. Everything below assumes you are arriving from outside the EEA.

The island is big enough to have real coverage zones

Crete is Greece's largest island, and it is the one Greek destination where "coverage" is a genuine variable rather than a formality. The four main towns — Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos — are well covered, and so is the Knossos archaeological site just outside Heraklion. Anyone whose trip stays on the north coast will notice nothing at all.

The interior is different, and most people do go inland. Car rental is effectively required to see anything beyond the north coast towns, and rural Crete's mountain villages are a navigation problem: the routes are complex, the signage is sparse, and phone reception through the ranges is not something to plan around. Download the offline map area for the whole island before you set off on the first drive. That single habit removes most of what could go wrong.

The Samaria Gorge is offline, and you should plan for it

The Samaria Gorge is Europe's longest at 16 km, and it is offline for most of the hike. This is not a plan you can buy your way around — no allowance reaches the bottom of a gorge. Download the trail map on AllTrails before you start walking, and tell someone your timings, because you will not be sending updates from inside it.

Preveli Beach, reached either by boat or by a 2 km cliff walk, has limited signal too. Between them these are the two places where visitors most often expect a connection and do not get one.

Buying on the island

Greece asks for no ID and the purchase is instant, which is as easy as SIM buying gets in Europe. A Greek airport SIM is around $15 in our data. Cosmote, Vodafone Greece and Wind Hellas are the national networks; we have not checked which of them a given shop in Chania or Heraklion stocks, or at what price.

Where the local option earns its place on Crete is if you want a Greek number for calling ahead to tavernas and villa owners in the interior, which is a real use case on an island where a lot of bookings happen by phone. For data alone it is not the cheapest route.

The arithmetic favours long stays

Crete gets visited for longer than the Cyclades — a week minimum, often two — and Greek pricing rewards that unusually well. Saily's 10 GB month is the row that moved: we had it at $19.99, and the verified price is $22.99. At $2.30 a gigabyte it is now dearer than Airalo's 10 GB at any duration, so it is no longer the plan to reach for if you want a month's validity on a fortnight's driving — Airalo's 10 GB over 15 days at $19.50 covers the same trip for less.

The Greek ladder keeps improving all the way to the top, which is not true everywhere. Fifty gigabytes from Nomad for $31 is 62 cents a gigabyte — the best verified value in the country, and the obvious choice for two people sharing a hotspot on a two-week road trip. Airalo sells the same allowance for $42, which this page previously called the floor. A single traveller doing a week of driving and offline-map downloads will find 10 GB ample.

One thing to be honest about: none of this changes what happens in the Samaria Gorge or on a mountain road above Anogia. You are buying capacity for the towns and the drives between them, not reach into the places that have none.
