Luxor: good signal in a small city, and one message you cannot afford to miss

A small city with an ordinary signal problem

Luxor packs the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Luxor Temple and the Tombs of the Nobles into a circuit you can cover in a couple of days, and the city itself has good signal on both Vodafone and Orange. Nothing about being far up the Nile from Cairo makes the network worse.

The gaps are shallow and predictable. Deep tomb interiors — the burial chambers in the Valley of the Kings especially — have no signal, which is expected when you are underground and lasts only as long as the descent. The other one is the river: most of the tombs are on the West Bank, reached by the local ferry, and signal is intermittent mid-crossing. Neither is worth choosing a plan around.

What that means practically is that Luxor is a low-data destination. You are walking around monuments in daylight, taking photographs, and looking up which tomb tickets cover what. A small plan is genuinely enough.

The balloon message is the real dependency

Sunrise balloon flights over the West Bank are one of the things people come to Luxor for, and they are also the one part of a Luxor trip that fails without a connection.

Flights depend on the wind, so they are confirmed — or cancelled, or shifted — the night before, and many operators do that over WhatsApp rather than email or a booking system. Pickup is often before dawn. That is a message you need to receive on the evening of arrival, at a hotel whose wi-fi may or may not be working, followed by a very early morning where you may need to reach the operator from the street.

So the useful Luxor-specific advice is dull but real: make sure your plan is active and has data left on the day you arrive, not just on the day you fly. If your itinerary is Cairo first and Luxor second, a three-day plan bought for the arrival will have expired by the time the balloon company messages you.

Prices, and why small plans sting here

Egypt is the most expensive market in our data per gigabyte, and the verified rows show it: 3 GB over a week at $14.50 is about $4.83 a gigabyte. The metered ladder tops out at 20 GB, so there is no large-size row to bring the average down the way there is in most countries.

The indicative rows undercut that, but we have not read those prices off the providers' own sites, so check them at checkout rather than budgeting on them. Nomad's rows have been checked: an earlier version of this page listed its 3 GB month at $8, and the real price is $12. Its 20 GB month at $37, or $1.85 a gigabyte, is the cheapest rate in the country.

The better lesson for Luxor is about duration rather than size. Because you need coverage across arrival evening and flight morning, and because Egyptian pricing barely rewards buying bigger, the sensible purchase is a modest allowance over a comfortable number of days rather than a large allowance over three. A local Egyptian SIM runs about $8 at an airport counter and needs your passport to register; for a two-day Luxor stop that is more effort than it is worth, though it makes sense on a longer Egyptian trip.

On networks: the providers that publish anything for Egypt name Vodafone Egypt and Orange Egypt in their own listings, and nobody has confirmed that against the carriers. Airalo does not publish a host network here at all. In Luxor city both major networks reach the tourist circuit, so it is not a decision you need to make.

The evening before

• Check your plan covers arrival night and flight morning, not just the sightseeing days
• Have WhatsApp working and notifications on before the operator messages
• Download offline maps for the West Bank as well as the city
• Expect nothing underground, and nothing reliable mid-river
