Buying a SIM on arrival at Cairo International

What we hold, and what we don't

Cairo International has three passenger terminals. We hold no information about which of them has SIM counters, where in the arrivals hall they sit, or what hours they keep — so this page will not pretend otherwise. What our source does record is specific and useful: the carriers selling in arrivals are Vodafone Egypt and Orange Egypt, the queue is about eight minutes off-peak and twenty minutes at peak, and a passport is required to register the SIM.

Free wifi is generally available in the terminal. That is enough to message someone that you have landed; it is not enough to run a ride-hailing app on the way into the city.

Twenty minutes is a long queue by the standards of the airports we cover, and the passport step is what makes it long — Egyptian registration is a form-filling exercise, not a card tap.

Egypt is one of the markets where the counter can win

We usually tell people the airport counter is the expensive option. Egypt is the exception worth flagging, because the eSIM prices here are high by international standards and the counter price is low.

Our data puts a local SIM at about $8 at the airport. The cheapest verified gigabyte from a travel eSIM in Egypt is $2.10, on a 20 GB plan. Those two numbers are not directly comparable, because we do not hold what data allowance comes with the $8 SIM — and that missing figure is the whole comparison. Egyptian operators are known for selling large bundles cheaply, so ask what is included, in gigabytes, before you decide. If the answer is several gigabytes, the counter beats anything below.

What you are paying for that saving is your passport details and up to twenty minutes after a long flight.

What Egyptian eSIMs cost

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. Airalo's rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026; the rest are indicative listings we have not confirmed.

Egypt genuinely stops at 20 GB. We say that carefully, because several countries appear to stop at 20 GB until you scroll down and find a 50 GB plan that is the cheapest per gigabyte on the list. Here there is no such row: 20 GB for 30 days at $42 is the top of the metered ladder and, at $2.10 a gigabyte, also the best verified value. Unlimited plans exist above it but are priced by duration rather than data.

Compare that with the Czech Republic or Germany at around $0.72 a gigabyte and Egypt looks expensive, because it is. The full ladder sits on the Egypt hub.

A practical order of operations

If you want the counter deal, install nothing and budget twenty minutes with your passport in hand. If you want to walk straight out of the terminal, install an eSIM before you fly — Cairo arrivals is a busy, crowded place to be standing still with luggage while you sort out data, and having maps and a ride booked before you leave the hall is worth real money.

The compromise that works well here: a small, cheap eSIM to cover arrival and the ride into town, then a local SIM bought in the city at leisure if you are staying long enough for the price difference to matter.

Which network the eSIMs use

Airalo sells Egypt under the name Giza Mobile. That is Airalo's own product name, not a carrier, and Airalo does not publish which Egyptian network its plans roam onto. eSIMCard names Vodafone Egypt and Orange Egypt in its own listing, but nobody has verified that against the operators. Nomad, Saily and Holafly name nothing at all, whatever earlier versions of this page said. Treat the one listing that exists as the seller's claim rather than an established fact, and do not choose a plan on that basis.
