Arriving at Hurghada: what to buy, and whether to bother

Start with whether you need anything

Hurghada is a resort airport, and that changes the answer. Most arrivals here are on a package or a pre-booked transfer, heading to a Red Sea hotel where the wifi is generally good. If that is your trip, the data you actually need is a small amount, for a short window: the transfer, the excursion booking, the WhatsApp message home before you are on hotel wifi.

Buying a 30-day local SIM at a counter for that is overkill. So is a large eSIM. The honest recommendation for a one-week resort stay is the smallest plan that covers arrival and the days you will be out of the hotel.

If you are diving daily, taking boats out, or driving to Luxor and back, ignore the paragraph above — you are a normal traveller with normal data needs and the rest of this page applies.

What we hold on HRG

Our source records the carriers selling in arrivals as Vodafone Egypt and Orange, a queue of about five minutes off-peak and fifteen at peak, and a passport requirement for registration. Free wifi is generally available in the terminal.

We hold nothing about which terminal the counters are in, nothing about their opening hours, and nothing about whether they open for the early-morning charter arrivals that Hurghada handles a lot of. That last gap matters more here than at a hub airport, because a charter landing at dawn may find nothing open at all. Do not build your arrival around a counter we cannot confirm is staffed.

What a small amount of data costs

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. Airalo's rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026 and Nomad's from nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026; the others are indicative listings we have not confirmed.

Egypt is an expensive eSIM market and the small plans are where it shows worst. That verified 3 GB over 7 days works out at $4.83 a gigabyte — more than twice the rate of the country's best row. If you only want a couple of gigabytes, Saily is cheaper on paper, though that figure has not been read off its own store the way the verified ones have. Nomad's have: its 1 GB week is $6, not the $4 an earlier version of this page listed.

Egypt genuinely stops at 20 GB for metered plans, which is unusual and worth stating plainly. The best verified value in the country is that 20 GB plan at $2.10 a gigabyte — the whole ladder is on the Egypt hub — but nobody on a week in a hotel needs 20 GB, so the ceiling is academic for most Hurghada arrivals.

A local SIM at the airport runs about $8 in our data. We do not hold the allowance behind that price, so we cannot tell you whether it beats the eSIMs; for a resort week the difference is a few dollars either way.

Networks

Airalo sells Egypt as Giza Mobile, which is a product name rather than a carrier, and Airalo does not publish which Egyptian network its plans roam onto. eSIMCard points to Vodafone Egypt and Orange Egypt in its own listing, which nobody has independently confirmed. Nomad, Saily and Holafly point to nothing. If a plan choice depends on which network reaches a particular stretch of the Red Sea coast, we cannot make that call for you.
