Mobile data in Ghent: what actually differs

The honest answer: Ghent is no different

There is no Ghent plan, no Ghent price and no Ghent quirk in our data. Belgian eSIMs are sold nationally, so what you pay in Ghent is what you pay in Brussels, Antwerp or Bruges. We have not measured mobile performance in the city ourselves, so we are not going to tell you the historic centre is faster or slower than anywhere else — that claim gets made a lot and nobody has checked it.

What is genuinely local is how people visit. Ghent is a short-stay city: Gravensteen, the Graslei waterfront and Saint Bavo's Cathedral sit within a walkable centre, and a lot of trips here are one or two nights bolted onto Brussels or Bruges. That changes which plan is right, not which provider.

Most EU and EEA visitors buy nothing

If your contract is from an EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home covers Belgium at your domestic rate, out of your domestic allowance. There is nothing to buy. Check your fair-use roaming cap before you travel and then forget about it.

The rest — UK, US, Canada, Australia, most of Asia — need either a travel eSIM or a Belgian prepaid SIM. For a two-night stop, the paperwork settles it: Belgian prepaid registration requires a passport or ID card, and queuing to register a SIM you will use for 40 hours is a poor use of a short trip.

Plans that fit a short stay

Belgian plans are sold with a hard duration as well as a size, and the short-duration rows are the ones that suit Ghent. Airalo's prices below were read from its own store on 13 August 2026; the Saily row from Saily's own site on 18 August 2026.

Going up a size is cheap here — moving from 3 GB to 5 GB on the same seven days costs $1.50 — so the mistake to avoid is buying the very smallest plan and running dry on your last morning.

If Ghent is one stop in a longer Belgian trip, ignore that table and look at the top of the ladder instead. The verified 50 GB for 30 days at $32.50 is the cheapest gigabyte we hold for Belgium, at $0.65, and Belgium does not stop at 20 GB the way some markets do. The full set is on the Belgium hub.

Airalo also sells Belgium under a second badge, Belganet+, at a higher price for the same sizes. It does not publish what the premium buys, so we would take the cheaper one.

Networks, and what we do not know

Airalo does not publish which Belgian network its plans roam onto, and neither does Saily or Nomad. Holafly's listing names nothing. This page used to give it Proximus, Orange and Base, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Nobody has verified that against the operators, so we would not choose a plan on that basis in Ghent or anywhere else.

One local timing note

Gentse Feesten runs for ten days each July and fills the historic centre with music and performances. Crowds that size are a good reason to have maps and tickets downloaded before you walk in, whatever your connection. Buy the plan that covers your dates — a three-day plan bought on arrival will expire mid-festival if your stay runs longer.
