There is nothing to buy in the terminal

Brussels South Charleroi has no SIM counters. That is the whole of the retail answer, and it is unusual enough among European airports to be worth stating plainly rather than burying.

The nearest places to buy on our record are shops in Charleroi city, or Brussels, an hour away. Neither is somewhere you want to be detouring to with a bag, and neither is on the route most arrivals take.

So unlike Brussels Airport, where the real question is whether the 15-minute queue and the passport check are worth it, Charleroi has no question to answer on arrival. Whatever you are going to do about data, you do it before you land or you do it later, in a town.

The queue time on the old version of this page was fiction

The page this replaces printed a peak queue of 10 to 15 minutes and an off-peak one of under 5 — for an airport it also said had no SIM counters. Those numbers were template filler, applied to every airport in the set regardless of whether anything was open. We have removed them. There is no queue at Charleroi because there is nothing to queue for.

The country rules still apply wherever you do end up buying: Belgium requires ID for SIM registration, so a passport comes out at the counter in Charleroi city just as it would at the airport.

Most people landing here need nothing at all

Charleroi is a budget-airline airport — Ryanair and its peers — and much of that traffic is intra-European. If you are flying in from another EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home means your home bundle works in Belgium at domestic rates. You do not need a Belgian SIM, and the absence of counters costs you nothing.

Check two things before you decide you are covered: whether your plan includes EU roaming at all, and what its fair-use data allowance is. Those are the only two ways an EU arrival gets caught out here.

If you are outside the roaming zone

Arrivals from the UK, and from anywhere further afield, do have a problem to solve, and the terminal will not solve it. Install an eSIM before you fly. Free wi-fi is generally available at the airport, so installing after landing works too — but that assumes the wi-fi is up and your provider's activation goes cleanly, which is a worse plan than doing it at home.

Belgium runs cheaper than most of Western Europe, and the best value is at the large end — $0.65 a gigabyte on the 50 GB plan, against $4.00 on the 1 GB starter. If you are here for a week and only need maps and messaging, the small plan is fine; if you are working or tethering, the arithmetic points hard the other way.

Belganet is Airalo's own product name for Belgium, not a network. Airalo, Saily and Nomad do not publish which Belgian network their plans roam onto — the two operators this page used to attribute to Nomad's mid-size plans came from generated text, not from Nomad. Holafly's listing names three, which we have not confirmed. Nobody at Charleroi can tell you either, because there is nobody at Charleroi selling SIMs.
