Buying a SIM card at Tirana International

What is in TIA arrivals

Two carriers have counters in Tirana arrivals: Vodafone Albania and ALBtelecom. The queue runs about ten minutes at peak and three off-peak. A passport is required for SIM registration — Albania registers prepaid lines, so this is not a pay-and-go purchase.

Free WiFi is generally available in the terminal, and public transport and taxis both connect the airport to the centre of Tirana.

We do not hold the counters' opening hours or their exact positions in the terminal. Tirana's schedule is heavily weighted towards low-cost European flights arriving late in the evening, so if you land after eleven, have a fallback.

Why this is not the usual advice

Most airport SIM pages on this site tell you to sort your data out before you fly. Albania is a genuine exception, for two reasons.

The first is price. A local SIM at Tirana airport typically runs about $8. That is the cheapest airport SIM price in our entire dataset. We do not hold the data allowance attached to it, which is the standard caveat — but $8 is a low enough entry price that even a modest bundle competes hard against an eSIM.

The second is regional roaming. Albanian SIMs commonly include roaming across the Western Balkans, which matters if your trip is Tirana plus Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro or Serbia rather than Albania alone. We do not hold the allowances or terms for any specific package, so ask at the counter — but a travel eSIM sold as an Albania plan will not do that for you unless you buy a regional product.

The corresponding point for the other direction: Albania is outside the EU, so EU and EEA roam-like-at-home does not apply. If you have arrived from Italy or Greece assuming your home bundle follows you, it does not. That assumption catches out a lot of visitors, and it is why the Tirana counter has a queue at all.

What the eSIMs cost

Albania genuinely stops at 20 GB. There is no 50 GB plan here, unlike most European markets, so the ceiling is real rather than a gap in our data. These are read from Airalo's own site:

$1.80 per gigabyte at the top is mediocre by European standards — Austria, next door in EU terms, reaches $0.58. Albania's eSIM market is small and priced accordingly.

Indicative prices from providers we have not verified: Saily 3 GB for 30 days at $8.99 and 5 GB for 30 days at $12.99, Nomad 5 GB for 30 days at $25, Holafly unlimited for 5 days at $19.

Set the verified $22 for 10 GB against a roughly $8 counter SIM and the case for buying at TIA is straightforward, provided the counter's bundle is not tiny. That is a real if, and it is the question to ask before you pay.

Networks

Saily, Nomad and Holafly all publish nothing here. We read each seller's own pages: not one names a carrier, for Albania or for any other country. The Vodafone Albania and ALBtelecom entries this page used to carry came from our own older data rather than from the providers, and they have gone.

Airalo publishes no host network for Albania, or for any country. Its plans here are sold under the product name Hej Telecom at checkout; that is a retail label, not an Albanian carrier, and you should be suspicious of any page that lists it in a network column.

Buying at the TIA counter is the only way to know which network you are on. In a country with mountainous terrain and a lot of visitors driving south to Sarandë or inland to the Accursed Mountains, that is worth something.

Verdict

Buy at Tirana airport. The counter is cheap, both major carriers are represented, the queue is short, and a local SIM may carry Western Balkans roaming that no Albania-only eSIM will match. Bring your passport, and ask what the data allowance actually is before paying.

Buy an eSIM instead if your phone supports one, your stay is short, and you would rather land connected than queue — the $4 one-gigabyte plan is enough for maps and messaging over a long weekend. Full plan list on our Albania hub.
