Sarandë — good coverage, one border to think about

The ferry is the part worth planning for

Sarandë is the closest point in Albania to Greece — roughly 8km by sea from Corfu, and a short crossing. Out on the water your phone may register on a Greek network rather than an Albanian one, and that is where an Albania-only plan stops being useful. A travel eSIM sold for Albania carries no Greek allowance, so once the handset latches onto a Greek tower you have a phone with no data until it settles back.

There is no clever fix, only two sane choices. Either accept an hour offline and load your onward directions, ticket and accommodation address before you board, or buy a regional plan that covers both countries instead of an Albania-only one. If your provider offers roaming outside the country you bought for, check the rate before the crossing rather than after it.

Worth being clear about one thing: Albania is not in the EU or EEA, so the roam-like-at-home rules that make a European contract painless in Greece do not extend to the Albanian side. Most EU visitors arriving here do need to buy something, which is not true a few kilometres east.

Coverage along the Riviera

The coast itself is well served. Ksamil — the turquoise water that gets it called the Albanian Maldives — along with Borsh and Himara are all covered. The gaps are on foot: some of the cliff hiking paths south of Ksamil lose signal, and they are exactly the sort of paths where you might want a map.

The other seasonal quirk is load rather than coverage. In peak July and August, the most popular Ksamil beaches get congested enough to slow data noticeably. Pre-download maps and your accommodation details before heading to the busy sections and the problem disappears.

Buying here is harder than in Tirana

Albania requires a passport or ID for SIM registration, and Sarandë has no airport, so the roughly $8 airport tourist package that makes buying easy in the capital is not something you can pick up on arrival. Most people reach Sarandë by ferry or by bus. We hold no verified detail on which shops in town sell prepaid SIMs, and rather than guess, the recommendation is simple: install an eSIM before you travel, or buy your local SIM at Tirana if you are passing through.

Albanian prices, and where the ladder stops

Read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026. Two things stand out. The largest metered plan we hold for Albania is 20GB — there is no 50GB tier here as there is in some European markets — and that 20GB is also the cheapest data per gigabyte in the country's ladder, so a long stay should buy it rather than stacking small plans. And Albania is not a cheap market: even the best rate here is well above what the same provider charges in EU countries next door.

Unmetered plans exist but are priced accordingly. Airalo's verified unlimited runs $20.50 for 3 days and $26 for 5. Holafly lists unlimited at $28.90 for 5 days, which undercuts that, but Holafly's figure was read off its own site on 18 August 2026.

Networks

Airalo does not publish a host network for Albania — "Hej Telecom" is the product name at checkout, not a carrier. Saily, Nomad and Holafly publish nothing either: none of the three names a carrier for Albania or for any other country, and the Vodafone Albania and ALBtelecom entries this page used to carry against them came from our own older data rather than from the sellers.
