Local SIM or travel eSIM in Albania — the per-gigabyte answer

Start with the price per gigabyte

One thing first, because it costs more than any choice below: Albania is not in the EU. A European SIM that has cost you nothing extra in Greece or Italy starts billing roaming the moment you cross, which catches out a lot of people arriving on the short ferry hop from Corfu.

With that out of the way — Albania is one of the countries where the local SIM does not just edge the travel eSIM, it beats it outright on volume. A local pack sold at around $24 carries 40GB and includes free roaming across the Western Balkans. That works out near $0.60 a gigabyte. The cheapest large travel eSIM we have checked ourselves is Nomad's 50GB for 30 days at $49 — $0.98 a gigabyte, about 60% more.

That arithmetic only matters if you are going to use 40GB. Most people spending five days on the Riviera will use two or three. At that end of the market the eSIM wins on effort rather than price, and the price difference shrinks to a few dollars.

Buying locally: what it involves

Tirana International Airport has Vodafone and ALBtelecom counters in arrivals, and a tourist starter pack costs around $8 there. Vodafone, ALBtelecom and Eagle Mobile all have shops in Tirana if you would rather buy in town.

The friction is registration. A passport or ID is required, so this is a counter transaction with a form, not a grab-and-go purchase. Budget ten minutes at the airport and more at a busy city shop.

What the eSIMs charge

Airalo's Albania packages are sold under the name Hej Telecom, and the prices below were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026. Nomad's were read from nomadesim.com this week. The Saily and Holafly figures come from our plan data rather than a fresh check, so treat those as indicative.

Two things stand out. An earlier version of this page put Nomad's 5GB month at $25 and called it nearly double Airalo's; that number was wrong. Nomad's verified price is $12, it undercuts Airalo at every metered size in Albania, and it is the only provider here that sells 50GB. And Holafly's $19 five-day unlimited is only worth it if you genuinely cannot predict your usage — $19 buys 10GB from Nomad with three weeks of headroom and $2 change instead.

Where the network choice stops being academic

Vodafone Albania has the widest coverage and the strongest 4G performance in the country. ALBtelecom is competitive; Eagle Mobile is the budget option. National average speed sits around 35 Mbps.

Coverage falls away in predictable places. The Accursed Mountains have extensive dead zones — this is the one that catches hikers out, because the trails there are popular and the gaps are long. Remote highland villages and some inland mountain valleys are patchy. Around the Llogara Pass the main road itself is covered, so a coastal drive is fine.

No eSIM plan solves a dead zone. If your trip includes the highlands, the useful preparation is offline maps, not a bigger data allowance.

The verdict

For a trip of a week or less on the coast, buy a travel eSIM and pick on price — Nomad's verified 5GB at $12 or Saily's cheaper entry tier both do the job. For two weeks or more, or if you are driving on to Kosovo, North Macedonia or Montenegro, the local 40GB pack at about $24 with its Western Balkans roaming is still the better buy — though at $0.98 a gigabyte Nomad's 50GB has narrowed that gap a long way, and it needs no passport and no queue. That option pays this site nothing, which is rather the point.
