Busan — the same plan as anywhere in Korea, with one October caveat

There is no Busan-specific problem to solve

Korea's second city is a port wedged between mountains and sea, which is the sort of geography that usually produces coverage complaints. It does not here. Haeundae, Nampo-dong, Seomyeon, Gamcheon Culture Village and the coastal trails are all well served by all three Korean carriers, and a plan bought for Seoul works identically in Busan.

That is the honest headline: for most visitors, most of the year, this page has nothing to add to the South Korea hub. Two situations are genuinely different, and they are below.

BIFF week, and why Haeundae goes slow

The Busan International Film Festival runs for ten days each October and draws over 200,000 attendees. The Haeundae Beach area during BIFF sees the most intense network congestion of any Korean event — a beachfront full of industry professionals and content creators all uploading at once, in a small number of venues.

Congestion is not a coverage problem and no eSIM fixes it. What helps is preparation: download tickets, screening schedules and venue locations before you go out, and expect the seafront to be slow during screenings and outdoor events rather than all day. Outside festival hours the city behaves normally.

Clifftops and the KTX

Igidae Coastal Park and the Taejongdae routes have signal on the main paths. The remote clifftop sections are intermittent, which is the one place in Busan where offline maps earn their keep. Save the route before you set out; the gaps are short but they land exactly where the path forks.

The KTX from Seoul takes about two and a half hours and holds signal the whole way. It is the best working stretch of a Korean itinerary — enough time and enough bandwidth to sort out bookings for wherever you go next.

What to buy

Those prices were read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026. Check the top of the ladder before assuming a small plan is thrifty: per gigabyte, the 50GB is the cheapest metered data in Korea and the 1GB at $4 for three days is the dearest. Buying on arrival is also easy. Korea asks for no ID for a prepaid tourist SIM, and airport packages run about $12. The reason to bother is a Korean number for bookings and delivery apps, not the data.

Networks

We cannot tell you which Korean carrier any eSIM actually uses. Airalo does not publish a host network for Korea — "Jjang" is a product name at checkout — and neither do Nomad or Saily, in Korea or anywhere. eSIMCard names SKT in its own listing, but nobody has confirmed that with SK Telecom. Since all three national networks cover Busan well, it is not a decision worth agonising over here.
