Mobile data in Sighișoara: sort it before you arrive

A small town with a retail problem, not a coverage problem

Sighișoara is a town of about 27,000 people built around the best-preserved inhabited medieval citadel in Transylvania — the walled upper town with its defensive towers, the covered staircase, and the house where Vlad the Impaler was born. It is small. That smallness is the whole story of this page.

Coverage inside the citadel is fine. Orange 4G reaches across the old town, which is where you will spend nearly all your time. Nobody needs a special plan for Sighișoara on coverage grounds.

What the town does not have is a single carrier store. If you arrive without data and decide you want a Romanian SIM, there is nowhere in Sighișoara to buy one. The realistic options are to buy in Brașov or Sibiu on your way through, or to arrive with an eSIM already installed.

Most European visitors should buy nothing

Romania is in the EU, so roam-like-at-home applies and an EU or EEA SIM works here at your domestic rate. Given how awkward buying locally is, that matters more in Sighișoara than in Bucharest: if your home bundle covers the trip, the town's lack of shops is irrelevant to you. Check your fair-use data cap and stop there.

If you do need to buy

An eSIM is the obvious answer in a town with no retail. Install it before you travel and Sighișoara's thin high street stops being a problem.

The Airalo rows were read from its own site on 13 August 2026 and the Nomad rows from nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026. An earlier version of this page priced Nomad's 10 GB at $14.00 rather than $16.00, and said Romania's metered plans top out at 20 GB. Both were wrong: the plan is $16.00, and Nomad sells 50 GB over 30 days for $45, which is $0.90 a gigabyte and the best rate in the country. The full ladder is on our Romania hub.

A physical Romanian SIM bought in Brașov or Sibiu is cheap — around $13 at airport prices, generally less in town — but Romania requires a passport or national ID to register a prepaid SIM, so it is a counter transaction with paperwork rather than a two-minute stop.

On networks, be careful what you read into provider marketing. Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly publish no host network at all, whatever an earlier version of this page said about them — including the Romanian carriers it credited to Holafly, which came from our own data rather than from Holafly. In a small Transylvanian town the network you land on could plausibly matter — which is exactly why we won't tell you it will be a particular one when we don't know.

Two local specifics worth knowing

The Clock Tower museum has reduced signal inside its stone walls. It is a thick-walled medieval tower; this is not a network fault and it clears the moment you step out.

The Medieval Festival in July brings a large crowd into a town built for a fraction of it. Expect the usual festival effect on a small-town network — slower data in the citadel while everyone is there — and expect accommodation and transport to need booking well ahead. Outside that week, Sighișoara is quiet, and so is its network.
