Data in Brașov — an easy city with one honest caveat

The short answer

Brașov is not a special case. The city centre has excellent connectivity, and so does almost everywhere visitors go from it. If you were hoping for a Brașov-specific trick, there isn't one, and we would rather say that than pad the page.

What is worth ten minutes of your attention: the day-trip circuit is covered, which affects how much data you need to buy, and the mountains above the city are where it stops being reliable.

The castle circuit is fine

Brașov is the base for the Dracula tourism circuit, and the three obvious day trips are all inside easy range: Râșnov Fortress at 15 km, Bran Castle at 28 km, and Peleș Castle at Sinaia around 50 km. The areas around all three have good coverage.

Practically, that means the standard day-trip anxiety does not apply here. You can book a return train, call a taxi or check opening times from the castle car park. There is no need to download the entire day in advance the way there is at a national park or an Arctic viewing site, and no need to buy a bigger plan because you expect to be stranded offline.

Tâmpa Mountain, reached by cable car straight out of the city, has coverage at the summit — the viewpoint over the old town works as a place to post from. Poiana Brașov, the ski area above the city, has good coverage across the resort.

Where it thins out

The outer Carpathian trails above about 1,200 m are variable. Not dead, but not to be relied on: fine in places, gone in others, and you will not know which until you are there.

If your Brașov trip is a city-and-castles trip, this never affects you. If you are walking out into the range, treat it as you would any mountain: offline maps downloaded before you set off, a rough plan left with someone, and no assumption that you can look something up at a junction.

What to buy

Romania is in the EU. If your home SIM is from an EU or EEA country you roam at domestic rates and should buy nothing — worth checking before you spend anything, since it covers a good share of Brașov's visitors.

For everyone else, a Romanian local SIM is around $13 at an airport counter and registration requires a passport or ID. We hold nothing specific about SIM retail in Brașov itself, so if you want a physical SIM, buy it where you land rather than counting on finding a shop here.

An earlier version of this page said Romania's metered ladder ends at 20 GB and that the best rate available was $1.35 a gigabyte. Both statements were wrong. Nomad sells 50 GB over 30 days here for $45, a price we have now read off its store, and at $0.90 a gigabyte that is the cheapest data in the country. Airalo does stop at 20 GB, so on Airalo a heavy month means unlimited: its verified unlimited runs from $11.50 for three days to $69 for thirty, and Holafly's indicative unlimited starts at $19 for five days.

For a few days of castles, cable cars and maps, 3 GB to 5 GB is the right size and the per-gigabyte arithmetic barely matters.

On networks: Airalo does not publish a host network for Romania, and "Noroc" on its checkout page is Airalo's own product name rather than an operator. Neither do Nomad or Saily — an earlier version of this page said they name Orange and Vodafone, which they do not. Nor does Holafly: the Digi listing this page used to carry against it came from our own data rather than from the seller.
