Jaipur: workable 4G, spread-out sights, and a heat problem

You will use more data here than you expect

Jaipur is not a walkable city in the way its old-town photographs suggest. Amber Fort, the City Palace and Nahargarh are spread across more than ten kilometres, and getting between them means ride-hailing, which means live data.

There is a second reason. Elephant rides at Amber Fort have been banned, and the alternatives now run through booking apps. Turning up and sorting it out on the spot is less workable than it used to be.

Signal across the city

Good 4G across the Pink City. Both Jio and Airtel are serviceable, and the main tourist sites — Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal — all hold a usable signal.

Average speed is around 15 Mbps, at the low end of India's 14 to 17 Mbps national band. That is enough for maps, cab apps and messaging, and not enough for anything heavy. 5G deployment here is limited, so do not plan around it.

Jio has the widest coverage across the Rajasthan region and is the better choice if your trip extends beyond the city.

Two dead spots worth knowing:

• Inside the rooms of Amber Fort — thick stone, no signal
• The narrow lanes of the old city — signal degrades noticeably

Neither is serious, but if you are meeting someone, agree the spot before you go in rather than expecting to call from inside the fort.

Heat is a connectivity issue here

From April to June Jaipur regularly passes 45°C. At those temperatures phones throttle, and a throttled phone with a hot battery is a phone that drops calls, loses GPS lock and shuts down.

That affects eSIM users in a specific way. Your connection profile lives on the device, so if the device overheats and powers down, you have no fallback handset to put a plastic SIM into. It is a small argument for carrying a physical SIM as backup if you are travelling in the hot season.

Practically: keep the phone out of direct sun on the dashboard, do not navigate with it mounted on a windscreen in May, and carry a power bank, because heat drains batteries fast.

Buying a SIM in Jaipur

Carrier stores for Jio and Airtel cluster around MI Road and the C-Scheme area, which is where most business-district retail sits. There is also a counter at Jaipur Airport. Bring a passport, a valid visa and a passport photograph — India's KYC rules apply everywhere, and registration can take up to 24 hours to clear.

The eSIM route avoids all of that. The cheapest India plan we hold a checked price for is Saily's 1 GB over seven days at $3.99, read from Saily's own site on 16 August 2026; Nomad lists $4 for the same shape of plan, and Airalo's 1 GB over three days was $4 on its own site when we checked on 13 August 2026.

Apps to have working

Uber and Ola for getting between the forts. Google Maps, downloaded offline for the old city. The Archaeological Survey of India app for ticketing at the monuments.

Install all of them before you arrive, particularly if you are relying on a local SIM that has not activated yet.

When to come

Peak season runs October to March, when the weather is straightforward and the city is busy. April to June is the heat window described above. If you are coming then, the connectivity advice is really device advice.
