The parts of Eger you came for have no signal

Eger is Hungary's wine capital, and the wine is drunk underground. The cellar tours in the Valley of Beautiful Women run through rock caverns where there is no usable signal, and the interior cellars of Eger Castle are the town's other recorded dead zone. Coverage underground is variable at best and absent at worst.

This is not a network failure anyone can fix, and no eSIM provider will do better than another, because they all sit on the same Hungarian masts. It is a planning point instead: whatever you want to read about a cellar, load it before you walk down the steps. Ticket QR codes, tasting notes, the map back into town, and any photos you want to show someone — all of it offline, in advance.

That is genuinely the main thing to know about mobile data in Eger.

Above ground, 30 Mbps

Eger runs at about two thirds of the national figure. In practice 30 Mbps is fine for everything a visitor does — maps, messages, uploading pictures of the castle — and the town centre coverage is described as good rather than patchy. No 5G figure is recorded for Eger, so assume 4G and be pleased if you get more.

T-Mobile is the best carrier here. Vodafone is also reliable in the town, which is worth knowing because Vodafone is otherwise the network our data associates most strongly with Budapest. Yettel is the third Hungarian network and is rated good in rural areas generally.

You will almost certainly not buy a SIM in Eger

Most people arrive on the two-hour bus from Budapest, and that is where you should sort connectivity out. There is a T-Mobile store in Eger city centre if something goes wrong, but planning to buy here means arriving disconnected in a town whose only essential app is Google Maps.

Hungary is unusually easy on this front: a prepaid SIM costs around $8 and needs no ID at all, so a Budapest purchase is a five-minute errand rather than a registration process. Slovenia and most of the neighbours require a passport. Hungary does not.

Against that $8, the eSIM case for a single day trip is about convenience rather than money. Airalo's 1GB for 3 days at $4.00 was read from their site on 13 August 2026, and it is live before you board the bus. Saily's 1GB for 7 days at $3.99 is a shade cheaper, and that figure was read off Saily's own site on 18 August 2026. Either covers a day of maps with room to spare.

If Eger is one stop in a longer Hungarian trip — the usual pattern is Budapest, Eger, Lake Balaton — buy on volume instead. If you hold an EU SIM, none of this applies

Hungary is in the EU, so an EU or EEA contract roams here at your home allowance under roam-like-at-home, subject to your operator's fair-use cap. Buy nothing. UK plans vary by operator post-Brexit and are worth checking.

One date to know

The Eger Wine Festival in September is the peak visiting period, and the cellars are at their busiest. Nothing in our data suggests the network struggles then, but it is the week when queueing underground with a dead phone is most likely, which brings you back to downloading in advance.
