Local SIM or travel eSIM in Hungary?

Most European visitors should buy nothing

Hungary is in the EU. An EU or EEA SIM roams here on your home allowance at no extra cost under roam-like-at-home, up to your operator's fair-use limit. If that is you, stop reading and keep your money. UK contracts vary by operator since Brexit — some include Hungary, some bill a daily fee — so check yours rather than guessing.

Everything below is for travellers from outside the bloc.

Hungary makes the local SIM unusually easy

Most of central Europe requires a passport and a registration form to activate a prepaid SIM. Hungary does not. A local SIM costs around $8 and needs no ID at all — you buy it and it works. That single fact does more to make the local option viable here than any price in the eSIM tables below.

The three networks are Magyar Telekom (T-Mobile), Yettel and Vodafone. T-Mobile has the widest 4G and 5G footprint and is the default choice for visitors; Vodafone is excellent in Budapest specifically; Yettel, formerly Telenor, is the strongest of the three in rural areas.

The catch is where you buy. Budapest Airport has exactly one seller, the Airport Hub store, and it sells Yettel tourist SIMs at €50–60. That is not a variation on the $8 city price, it is a different category of purchase, and we have written up what to do at BUD instead. Buy in the city, from a carrier store, or do not buy a physical SIM at all.

What we cannot tell you is how much data that $8 city SIM includes, or what a top-up costs, because we hold no Hungarian domestic tariff data. So the common claim that a local SIM wins on stays of two weeks or more is plausible here — the entry price is low and the friction is nil — but it is not something we have checked.

The eSIM ladder

Top to bottom that is a five-and-a-half-fold spread on the price of a gigabyte. Airalo's Hungarian packages appear as Szia! in the app.

Holafly sells unlimited data only: $20.50 for five days, $36.50 for ten, all verified. Holafly sells six windows and no others — 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days — so the 25-day plan this page used to list does not exist. Airalo's verified unlimited plans undercut each of those — $18.50 for five days, $34.50 for ten, $69 for a full thirty — and Nomad's verified unlimited undercuts Airalo in turn, at $11 for three days, $18 for five, $25 for seven and $33 for ten. Holafly does not support hotspot, so tethering a laptop rules it out entirely. Two more sellers, eSIM Go and eSIMCard, also cover Hungary. We hold no pricing for either and will not rank what we cannot see — eSIM Go publishes no consumer price at all, and eSIMCard's rows were withdrawn site-wide on 18 August 2026 after we read its pages and found ours wrong.

A quirk worth exploiting

Airalo lists 5GB for 7 days at $11.50 and 5GB for 15 days at also $11.50. Same allowance, same price, one has twice the life. There is no reason to buy the shorter one, and the two sit next to each other in the app where it is easy to tap the wrong row. Both figures were read from Airalo's site on 13 August 2026.

Check the validity column before the price column generally. The 5GB tier runs $11.50 for 7 days, $11.50 for 15 and $12 for 30, so a month of headroom costs 50 cents.

Where Hungarian coverage runs out

Urban coverage is strong and Budapest is excellent on all three networks. The recorded gaps are specific: the remote Zemplén Mountains in the northeast, some dead spots on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, and the deep sections of the Aggtelek caves. No eSIM choice fixes any of them, since the travel plans all ride the same national networks. Download offline maps before the Zemplén and expect nothing underground at Aggtelek.
