Vancouver: two hours from downtown to no signal at all

Vancouver's coverage question is not really about Vancouver

The city itself is straightforward. Downtown, Granville Island, the Stanley Park perimeter, the UBC campus and every other tourist area are well covered, and the SkyTrain is easy to navigate with TransLink's Compass Card app. If you never leave the city, this is a non-problem — buy on price and stop thinking about it.

What separates Vancouver from Canada's other big cities is how close the wilderness sits. You can be downtown at nine and outside coverage by eleven, and the transition is abrupt rather than gradual.

The Sea-to-Sky corridor is better covered than the geography suggests

The 99 km drive up to Whistler is one of Canada's most scenic, and it is well covered by Rogers and Telus along the main road. Whistler village has good connectivity of its own. For a highway with sea cliffs on one side and mountains on the other, that is better than you would guess, and it means the standard Whistler day trip needs no special preparation at all.

Squamish, halfway up, has coverage in town, which takes in the Sea to Sky Gondola and the base of the Stawamus Chief.

Where it drops

• The upper trails on the Stawamus Chief — spotty once you climb.
• Garibaldi Provincial Park — trail sections lose it.
• Backcountry trails off the main corridor — assume nothing.
• North of Whistler, into the Coast Mountains — the same.

The British Columbia rule is simple, and it does not depend on what you bought: download your route offline before you leave the car park. Coverage inside provincial park interiors cannot be relied on by anybody, and no travel eSIM changes it — none of them publishes a confirmed host network in any case, so nobody can even tell you whose coverage map to go and check.

What to buy

Read from the providers' own sites — Airalo on 13 August 2026, Saily on 16 August, Nomad on 18 August. The Airalo rows are the Canada Mobile tier; there is a dearer Canada Mobile Plus at the same sizes, and the listing does not say what the difference is.

We used to publish a far lower figure in that Saily row, and on it Saily was the obvious buy for a British Columbia loop. It was a guess. Reading Saily's own site on 16 August put the real price at $30.99, which is $7.99 dearer than Airalo's verified $23 for the same allowance and period, and the recommendation goes the other way now. Saily only stays competitive at 5 GB, where its $17.99 for 30 days buys far more time than Airalo's $14 for 7 days.

A week of city plus Whistler fits inside 5 GB without effort. A longer British Columbia loop with offline map downloads for every hike is a 10 GB job, and Airalo's verified $23 is the one to take.

Canada is expensive by the standards of our data, and the gap is easy to see once you compare countries: Airalo's verified 20 GB month costs $37 here, against $26 for the same size in Italy. Prepaid SIMs at least need no ID in Canada, so a walk-up purchase is instant — but our figure for a Canadian airport SIM is around $25, which is more than a verified 10 GB eSIM month costs at $23.
