Banff: book the shuttle before you run out of signal

The most important thing you do online here happens before you arrive

Banff is not a city. It is a resort town inside Canada's most-visited national park, and the useful advice here is less about speed than about where the signal stops and what you should have done before it did.

Start with the booking, because it catches people out. Since 2023, Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are reached by reserved Parks Canada shuttle in peak season — the Moraine Lake road is closed to private vehicles, and turning up without a reservation does not work. The reservation has to exist before you reach the park gate. The Parks Canada site is usable but clunky over a weak connection, so do it from a hotel in Calgary or in Banff town, on wifi, sitting down. Not from a roadside pull-off with one bar.

Where the signal is, and where it ends

• Banff town — solid. Banff Avenue, the gondola base and the main tourist strip are all fine, with Rogers and Telus both present.
• Lake Louise village — good.
• The backcountry — weak to nothing. The Plain of Six Glaciers, Sentinel Pass and the Skoki area all lose it.

Downloading topographic maps before a backcountry hike in the Rockies is a safety measure rather than a convenience. Weather turns, trails braid, and there is no connection out there to sort it out with. That holds whatever is in your phone and whoever sold it to you.

Canada is expensive, and that is the real decision

Worth knowing before you compare against wherever you travelled last: Canada is one of the pricier countries in our data. Airalo's verified Canada Mobile 50 GB month costs $84, while the same provider's 50 GB month in the United States is $42 — exactly half, for the country next door.

Canada is also one of the few places where Airalo sells two named tiers rather than one product line. Canada Mobile and Canada Mobile Plus appear at the same sizes at different prices: 10 GB for 30 days is $23 as Canada Mobile and $31 as Canada Mobile Plus. The listing does not tell us what the extra buys, so check on their own site before assuming the dearer one gives you more.

Saily used to look like the cheap way into Canada. Reading its own site removed that: at 5 GB for 30 days it is $17.99 against Airalo's verified $18, a one-cent difference, and at 10 GB for 30 days it is $30.99 against Airalo's $23. Nomad is cheaper than either now that its prices have been read — $13 at 5 GB and $17 at 10 GB — where this page previously carried an unchecked $20 for that 10 GB month.

One genuine Canadian advantage: prepaid SIMs need no ID and are an instant purchase, which is not the case in Japan or most of Europe. The price is the catch. Our figure for a Canadian airport SIM is about $25 against $7 for a verified three-day Airalo plan, so if you land at Calgary and drive straight west, install before you fly.

Sizing it

A Calgary arrival and a few days in Banff — the Parks Canada app, maps, accommodation lookups, photographs — fits inside 5 GB comfortably. An extended Rockies road trip taking in Jasper, the Icefields Parkway and Yoho is a 10 GB job, on the clear understanding that a plan covers the towns and nothing covers the wilderness between them.
