Cairns: covered in town, offline on the Reef, Telstra to the north

The two reasons you came have no coverage

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, and both are essentially without mobile signal.

That is not really a problem. You are snorkelling, or walking through rainforest; a phone is not part of it. The problem is upstream. Popular Reef trips and Daintree tours have to be booked in advance, and the booking, the confirmation and the meeting point all need a connection. Do that from your hotel or the airport, not from the boat ramp.

Cairns city itself is well covered, as are Palm Cove and Port Douglas and the main tourist corridor along the coast between them. For a trip that stays on that strip and goes out to the Reef by boat, connectivity is a non-issue and you should buy the cheapest plan that covers your dates.

North of the ferry is a different country

The Daintree River ferry crossing is roughly where reliable coverage ends for anything other than Telstra. Beyond it, and on any drive heading further north towards Cape York, Telstra is the only network with meaningful reach — the others drop away quickly.

This is genuine wilderness driving, and out there coverage is a safety question rather than a convenience. It is also the one thing on this page that should change what you buy.

You cannot buy Telstra as an eSIM

None of the travel providers we hold data for in Australia — Saily, Airalo, Nomad, eSIM Go, eSIMCard — publishes which network its plans use here. So an instruction to "check your eSIM runs on Telstra" cannot actually be carried out, and any page that gives it is asking you to verify something no provider states.

If you are driving north of the Daintree, buy a physical Telstra SIM in Cairns city before you go. Australia requires no ID to register a prepaid SIM, so it is a straightforward purchase; our figure for an Australian airport SIM is about $18. Do it in town rather than at the airport, because Cairns is a small international terminal with a basic kiosk rather than the full counter line-up you would find at Sydney or Melbourne.

If you are staying on the coastal strip, none of this matters and an eSIM installed before you fly is the easier route — particularly at CNS, where the arrivals options are thin.

A week in Cairns with Reef and rainforest days is light on data, because the days themselves are offline. Bookings, maps and photographs fit inside 3 to 5 GB for most people.

The Australian ladder does not stop at 20 GB, and the top of it is where the value is: the verified 50 GB month at $45 works out at $0.90 a gigabyte, against $1.80 for the 10 GB month. If Cairns is one stop on a longer Australian trip, that is the row to look at.

What to do before you leave the hotel

• Book Reef and Daintree tours in advance, and screenshot the confirmations
• Download offline maps for anything north of Port Douglas
• Note the tour operator's phone number somewhere you can read it offline
• Expect no signal on the boat, and treat it as part of the day
