Buying a SIM at Brisbane Airport, and the Telstra gap

What is actually on the counter at BNE

Brisbane Airport's international terminal has Optus and Vodafone kiosks in arrivals. There is no Telstra presence at the airport. The queue is typically about 10 minutes, shorter than Sydney or Melbourne, and Australian prepaid SIMs need no ID at all — the desk can activate you on the spot, passport still in your pocket.

For a trip that stays in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the southeast Queensland tourist corridor, that is the end of the problem. Optus covers that area fine, and ten minutes is a fair price for walking out connected.

The Telstra gap, and what you can honestly do about it

Telstra has meaningfully better reach across rural Queensland, and BNE is the airport where you cannot buy it. If your trip runs to the Whitsundays, Cairns, the Sunshine Coast hinterland, or any long driving through regional Queensland, that gap is worth planning around before you land.

Here we have to correct the advice this page used to give. You cannot buy a "Telstra eSIM" from a travel eSIM seller, because not one of the providers we track publishes which Australian network its plans roam onto. Saily, Airalo, eSIM Go, eSIMCard and Nomad all leave the host network unstated for Australia, so any instruction to check that your eSIM sits on the right Australian network is unfollowable. Nobody has published the answer.

Which leaves two honest options. If Telstra's rural reach genuinely matters for your route, buy a physical Telstra prepaid SIM: get connected on Optus at the airport, then pick Telstra up from a Woolworths or a carrier store in Brisbane city, 15–20 minutes away. If your trip stays urban, a travel eSIM is cheaper and the network question does not arise.

What the counter costs against buying before you fly

Our country record puts a typical Australian airport SIM at around $18. The Airalo eSIM prices below were read from Airalo's own Australian checkout on 13 August 2026, and the Saily prices mentioned after the table from Saily's on 16 August 2026.

The 50 GB tier is the cheapest gigabyte anywhere in our Australian data at $0.90, and it is the row most visitors never scroll down to. Cheaper headline prices exist — Saily's 1 GB for 7 days at $3.99 was verified on its own site on 16 August 2026 — but small plans buy expensive gigabytes. Saily's 10 GB month at $17.99, also verified, is a penny under the Airalo row above. Ten gigabytes for a month costs the same as the counter wants for a starter pack, and arrives already installed.

What we do not hold for Brisbane

We have no opening hours for the Optus or Vodafone kiosks, so a late-evening arrival is a gamble we cannot price for you. We also hold nothing on SIM sales in the domestic terminal — our record covers the international terminal only. If you connect through BNE domestically, assume nothing.

The Airtrain runs from the airport to Brisbane Central in about 22 minutes, with taxis and rideshare from outside arrivals. Free airport wi-fi is enough to install an eSIM or book a car if you land with no plan at all.

Should you buy at Brisbane at all

Staying in the southeast: the kiosk is fine. Ten minutes, no ID, around $18, done. Heading north or inland: the kiosk cannot sell you what you need and neither can an eSIM, so plan a city stop for a Telstra SIM.
