Bariloche: good signal in town, thinning fast up the valleys

Town is fine, the trails are not

Signal is good in Bariloche town on Personal and Claro, and the Cerro Catedral ski resort has coverage on its main runs. For a trip that amounts to a few days in town, a day on the mountain and a drive around the lake, connectivity is not something you need to think about.

It thins out quickly beyond that, and it thins progressively rather than all at once. Refugio Frey, the Tronador circuit and the Seven Lakes Road all lose signal as you go — you do not hit a hard edge, you watch the bars decline. That is worse than a clean cutoff in one specific way: it encourages you to keep assuming the phone will work, right up until it doesn't.

Personal goes furthest, and no eSIM sells it

Personal extends furthest into the Argentine Lake District. If back-country reach is what you care about, that is the network you want.

You cannot buy it as a travel eSIM. None of the providers we hold Argentine data for lists Personal as a host network — eSIMCard lists Movistar and Claro, and Holafly's shorter plans list Movistar Argentina, while Airalo, Nomad and Saily publish no host network for Argentina or anywhere else. Neither of the listings that does exist has been confirmed from source, so even the networks that are named are leads rather than facts.

An earlier version of this page claimed every eSIM here rides Movistar or Claro. It was not true, and it is worth correcting rather than quietly deleting, because the same claim is still circulating elsewhere.

The practical upshot is simple. If you are staying around town, buy whatever eSIM is cheapest for your dates and ignore the network question entirely. If you are heading up the valleys or driving south into Patagonia, buy a Personal SIM in Bariloche and choose the network deliberately. Argentina requires a passport for prepaid registration, so bring it; our figure for an Argentine airport SIM is about $15.

Assume offline for anything multi-day

Before any multi-day trek, or the long drive south, treat connectivity as intermittent and plan navigation offline. In practice that means:

• AllTrails routes downloaded while you still have signal in town, not at the trailhead
• The Catedral Alta Patagonia app loaded before a ski day
• Refugio contact numbers written down somewhere you can read without a connection
• Fuel and distance planned on the assumption you cannot look anything up

None of this is exotic advice. It is the standard mountain routine, and Bariloche is one of the places where people skip it because the town itself feels so well connected.

What the plans cost

Argentina is not a cheap market by regional standards. From our data; the Airalo rows were read from Airalo's own site on 13 August 2026, and the Nomad row from Nomad's on 17 August 2026:

The Argentine ladder stops at 20 GB — there is no 50 GB row here, unlike South Africa or New Zealand — and the top rung is still where the value is. Nomad's 20 GB month is $47 and Airalo's is $47 — $2.35 a gigabyte either way, against $3.40 for Airalo's 5 GB month. An earlier version of this page called Nomad's 20 GB month the cheapest data in the country. The $33 we printed for it, and the $1.65 a gigabyte we derived from it, were never read off Nomad's site, and were wrong.
