Buying a SIM card at Bariloche Airport

What is at BRC

Bariloche's airport is small and the arrivals hall is quick to cross. Our data has Personal and Claro available in arrivals, a peak queue of about ten minutes and three minutes off-peak, and a passport requirement for SIM registration. Free WiFi is generally available in the terminal. Public transport and taxis run the twenty-odd minutes into town.

We do not hold shop names, unit numbers or opening hours for BRC. It is a regional airport with a concentrated flight schedule, so counters may well be staffed around arrivals and shut otherwise. Do not plan around a desk we cannot confirm is open.

The Personal question, which is the whole point

Most airport SIM pages conclude that you should have bought an eSIM at home. Bariloche is the exception worth taking seriously, and the reason is network reach.

Personal is generally reckoned to have the best coverage across the Argentine Lake District — the roads around Nahuel Huapi, the Circuito Chico, the run south towards El Bolsón. If you are driving out of town rather than staying in it, that reach is not a detail.

Here is the problem. Personal does not appear in our provider data at all — not one travel eSIM in it names Personal as a host network for Argentina. eSIMCard is the only seller here that publishes host networks at all, and its own Argentine listing is the only place that would say — the Movistar and Claro pair our data used to carry for it came from this site's generated text rather than from eSIMCard. Airalo, Nomad, Saily and Holafly publish no host network for Argentina at all — Airalo's plans are sold under the product name Abrazo!, which is a retail label rather than a carrier.

So if Personal's coverage is what you want, the counter at BRC is the only route to it that we can identify. Not because the eSIMs are worse products, but because none of them claims to ride the network you would be buying them for.

That is a narrow recommendation and it comes with an equally narrow caveat: we have not verified that any counter at BRC stocks Personal on the day you land, only that Personal is listed among the arrivals carriers.

What the eSIMs cost

Argentina is not a cheap market, and unlike most countries we cover it genuinely does stop at 20 GB. There is no 50 GB row here to change the arithmetic. These are read from Airalo's own site:

$2.35 per gigabyte at the top of the ladder is roughly double what a well-supplied market charges, and it is the best verified rate available. Nomad's verified 20 GB for 30 days is $47 as well — the same rate to the cent, from a second seller. An earlier version of this page called Nomad's 20 GB month an unchecked bargain. The $33 we printed for it was wrong.

If you would rather not count gigabytes on a driving trip, Airalo's verified unlimited plans are $29 for 5 days and $39.50 for 10 days. Holafly lists unlimited at $39.50 for 10 days, verified.

A local SIM at an Argentine airport typically runs about $15. We do not hold the allowance that comes with it, which makes a direct comparison impossible — but at Argentine eSIM prices, $15 does not have to include much data to be competitive.

The verdict for Bariloche

Unusually, we would not tell you to walk past the counter. Argentina's eSIM prices are high, the local SIM is cheap by comparison, and the one network you might specifically want for Patagonian driving is not offered by any eSIM in our data.

Buy at BRC if you are hiring a car and heading out of town, and ask for Personal. Buy an eSIM before you fly if you are staying in Bariloche itself, want to be connected before baggage claim, or would rather not hand over a passport at a counter after a flight.
