Cape Town: strong signal, tunnel drops, and Airalo's two tiers

The city itself is easy

Signal is excellent throughout the city centre, Camps Bay, Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard. Table Mountain's cableway, the V&A Waterfront, the beaches — none of it presents a connectivity question, and for a trip that stays inside the city bowl you can buy on price alone.

Which makes the useful part of this page the three things that are not obvious.

Chapman's Peak and the peninsula drive

The Cape Peninsula loop is the day most visitors take, and Chapman's Peak Drive has brief signal drops in the tunnel sections. Brief is the operative word — these are short cuttings, not a Fiordland-scale dead zone — but a navigation app losing its fix on a cliff road with a queue behind you is unpleasant.

Download maps for the peninsula before you set off rather than relying on live routing. That covers Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach and Cape Point in one go, and it costs you nothing.

Three weekends the network struggles

Cape Town has predictable congestion events, and they are worth checking your dates against:

• New Year's Eve at the V&A Waterfront or on Signal Hill, where the crowds are large enough to swamp local capacity
• The Cape Town Cycle Tour in March
• The Cape Town Jazz Festival in April

All three produce localised congestion rather than an outage, and no plan or provider is immune. The practical response is the old one: agree a meeting point, and do not assume a data call will connect at midnight on the Waterfront.

Day to day, Cape Town runs on live data more than most cities. Uber is standard transport for visitors and works well here, and the MyCiTi buses cover the Waterfront to City Bowl corridor. Both assume a working connection.

Buying on the ground

South Africa requires a passport or ID to register a prepaid SIM, so a local purchase is a documented one rather than an instant one — bring the passport, not a photocopy. Our figure for a South African airport SIM is about $18, and Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C all sell prepaid.

For a city-only trip, the paperwork is the main argument for an eSIM instead. Nothing about Cape Town's coverage requires a particular carrier.

Prices, and Airalo's two lines

From our South Africa data, verified rows read from the provider's own site on 13 August 2026:

Two things stand out. First, the South African ladder does not stop at 20 GB, and the top rung is the best value on it — $0.98 a gigabyte for the verified 50 GB month, against $1.85 for the 20 GB one.

Second, Airalo sells two South Africa lines and lists every size under both. The cheaper is CellSA, the dearer CellSA Plus: the 50 GB month is $49 as CellSA and $55 as CellSA Plus, and the 3 GB week is $9 or $10. Both prices in each pair are verified. What the Plus tier buys is not stated by Airalo, so the rows above are all CellSA and that is the line we would buy — there is nothing published that would justify the premium.

On networks, plainly

An earlier version of this page told readers that certain eSIMs give you Vodacom access. Nothing supported it. Airalo publishes no host network for South Africa — CellSA and CellSA Plus are its own product names, not carriers — and the networks sitting against the other providers in our data were scraped from older prose rather than confirmed from source. Treat them as leads, not facts, and do not choose a provider on that basis.
