Christchurch Airport SIM cards: a short page, honestly

What we hold, and what we do not

Our source names Spark and One NZ as the carriers available in Christchurch arrivals. The queue is around ten minutes at peak and three off-peak — faster than Auckland, which fits an airport with fewer simultaneous long-haul arrivals. No ID is required for a prepaid SIM in New Zealand, so the sale itself is immediate.

That is the whole of it. We do not hold opening hours, we do not hold shop names or locations in the hall, and the two carriers appear as a combined listing in our source rather than as two identified counters — so we cannot tell you whether that means two desks, one desk carrying both, or a retailer selling for both. Free wifi is available in the terminal.

We would rather publish four honest paragraphs about CHC than eight padded ones. If you want a page with named terminals and shop hours, Auckland is the better documented of the two.

The South Island question is coverage, not price

Christchurch is the main gateway to the South Island, and that changes what you should be optimising for. A trip that runs to Aoraki, the West Coast, Fiordland or the Catlins spends real time in places where mobile coverage is patchy or absent regardless of which network you are on. New Zealand's terrain does that.

Two consequences. First, no SIM or eSIM makes those gaps go away, so download your maps for offline use before you set off — it costs nothing and it is the single most useful preparation for a South Island drive. Second, where networks do differ at the margins, you cannot resolve that difference through a travel eSIM, because none of them publishes a confirmed host network here. Buying at a carrier counter in arrivals is the only way to choose your network deliberately.

The numbers

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. Airalo's rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026; the Saily rows are indicative listings we have not confirmed.

New Zealand runs all the way to a verified 50 GB over 30 days at $49, which is $0.98 a gigabyte and the best verified rate in the country — well under the $2.40 a gigabyte of the 10 GB plan. A South Island loop is a long trip with a lot of navigation, so that top row is usually the right one. A SIM at a New Zealand airport is about $15 in our data, though we do not hold its allowance. Nobody's eSIM is confirmed on Spark

This site previously recommended Airalo for South Island coverage. The reason given was a host network it has never published. That was wrong twice over.

Airalo does not publish a host network for New Zealand. Nzcom is the retail name for its New Zealand plans, not a carrier. Saily, Nomad and Holafly do not publish one either, here or in any country they sell in. The Spark and One NZ pair our data used to carry against eSIMCard's rows came from this site's own generated text rather than from eSIMCard, so it should carry no weight in a decision about rural coverage. eSIMCard is the only one of the six that publishes host networks at all, so its own New Zealand listing is the place to look.

For a trip that stays around Christchurch, Banks Peninsula and the main highways, any of them will be fine and the cheapest per gigabyte is the sensible pick. For a trip that goes properly remote, buy from a carrier at the counter, keep expectations modest, and have your maps offline.
