SIM cards and eSIMs at Reykjavík Domestic Airport

Reykjavík Domestic Airport sits inside the city, a few minutes from the centre, and handles internal flights — Akureyri, Ísafjörður, Egilsstaðir and the island routes. Almost nobody arrives in Iceland here. If you flew into the country, you landed at Keflavík.

Our source data for RKV is contradictory: it mentions kiosks in the arrivals hall and gives a queue time of one to two minutes, and then states plainly that there is no SIM counter at the domestic airport. We are not going to reconcile that by guessing. Assume there is no SIM counter at RKV, and treat any kiosk you find as a bonus.

That is a low-stakes assumption, because RKV's location makes it a non-problem. You are in Reykjavík. The city's shops sell SIMs, and Iceland requires no ID to buy a prepaid one, so it is a straight over-the-counter purchase anywhere that stocks them.

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal. Taxis and buses connect it to the centre, though the walk is short enough that many people do not bother.

The one thing worth planning for

RKV's real relevance to connectivity is what happens after you take off from it.

If you are flying on to the Westfjords, the north or the eastern fjords, you are heading into terrain where mobile coverage is patchy and the nearest phone shop may be a long drive away. Sorting out data at RKV — or before you get to RKV — is worth doing precisely because the far end will not offer you a second chance.

An eSIM installed before you board covers this cleanly. So does buying a SIM in Reykjavík the day before. What does not work is planning to sort it out on landing at a regional airstrip.

What Iceland's data costs

A local SIM at an Icelandic airport typically runs about $20, allowance unknown. These prices are read directly from Airalo's own site:

On networks, be careful about what anyone tells you — including what this page used to say, which credited Nomad with naming Síminn, Nova and Vodafone Iceland. Nomad names no host network anywhere. The Síminn and Vodafone Iceland pairing this page also credited to Holafly's listing came from the same place. Airalo, Saily, Nomad, Holafly and eSIMCard publish no host network for Iceland at all, and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could — Nenna Mobile is an Airalo product name, not a carrier. If rural reach genuinely matters for your onward flight, the only certain route to a named network is buying that carrier's own SIM, which you can do in Reykjavík or at Keflavík.
