Galeão Airport SIM cards: the kiosk, and the registration question

What is actually in arrivals

Galeão is a bigger airport than its reputation suggests, and Terminal 2 handles most international traffic — which is where you will land if you are arriving from outside Brazil.

There is a TIM kiosk in arrivals. The queue runs eight to ten minutes, and tourist packages need passport registration, so budget for the paperwork as well as the wait. Tourist packs are priced at R$30–70; our own data records a typical airport SIM price of about $6, which sits at the bottom of that range.

We do not hold opening hours for the kiosk, and we do not hold its exact position in the hall. If you are on a red-eye, do not build your arrival around it being staffed.

Registration, and the CPF you will read about

What our data records is one line: passport or ID required for registration. The kiosk registers tourist packages against a passport, and that is the requirement we can stand behind.

Brazilian travel writing describes something stronger — prepaid registration tied to the CPF, the national taxpayer number, which visitors do not have. In those accounts Vivo's airport counters are the ones that ask for it and TIM is the accommodating carrier. We have not verified how any GIG counter handles it, and nothing in our own data mentions a CPF, so we are not going to tell you the local SIM is off the table, nor that a particular counter is the one that works. Bring your passport, expect it to be enough, and do not let the whole arrival hinge on the kiosk saying yes.

That is worth understanding before you land, because the fallback is not another counter. It is your phone, and whatever you did or did not install before you flew.

Order your Uber before you leave the arrivals hall

This is the Rio-specific advice that matters more than anything about data plans. Rio safety guidance is consistent: connect to the airport wifi, open Uber inside the terminal, set your destination, and only walk out once your driver is confirmed and you can watch them approaching. Do not accept the unlicensed taxi approaches in the arrivals area.

That sequence needs a working connection at the moment you land, which is exactly what an eSIM installed before departure gives you — no wifi login, no kiosk queue, no standing in the hall with your phone out looking for a network. If you are joining the airport wifi instead, do it before you clear customs rather than after.

For onward transport: the BRT connector runs from Galeão to Alvorada terminal in Barra da Tijuca with connections from there. It is cheap and slow. A taxi or Uber to Ipanema, Copacabana or the centre is R$70–120.

The numbers

Prices are per plan in US dollars with the duration attached. Airalo's rows were read from its own store on 13 August 2026, Saily's from Saily's own site on 16 August and Nomad's from Nomad's on 18 August. Everything else is an indicative listing we have not confirmed.

An earlier version of this page said Brazil genuinely stopped at 20 GB. The Nomad price we printed on that rung, $26, was a figure nobody had read. Both were wrong. Nomad's 20 GB is $31, and it sells a 50 GB month at $45 — $0.90 a gigabyte, the cheapest data in the country by a distance. Airalo does top out at 20 GB, where its $36 works out at $1.80 and its 15-day version at $35 is marginally better at $1.75. Saily's verified 20 GB is $39.99, or $2.00 a gigabyte.

Saily's monthly prices were understated here until this update: its 10 GB month was recorded at $17.99 and is in fact $24.99. Corrected, it is the dearest metered option in Brazil above 3 GB. The one Saily plan still worth the airport comparison is the 1 GB week at $3.99.

Against those rates, a R$30–70 TIM pack at the kiosk is not a bad deal at all — this is one of the airports where the local option competes rather than gouges. The obstacle is registration, not price. The full ladder is on the Brazil hub.

Which network you are getting

Nobody publishes a confirmed host network for Brazil. Airalo, Nomad, Saily, eSIM Go and eSIMCard publish nothing at all; Maneiro is Airalo's product name for its Brazilian plans, not a carrier. Holafly names nothing either. This page used to give it TIM and Vivo, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. An earlier version of this page also attributed Vivo and Claro to Nomad; Nomad publishes no host network anywhere, and that attribution came from our own older text.

Buying the TIM SIM at the kiosk is the one way to know what you are on. Whether that is worth the queue and the passport depends on how long you are staying — for a week in Rio, an eSIM bought at home and live on landing is the easier trade, and it means you can order that Uber before you reach the door.
